“Design Paradigm Shifts” vormt de eindexamencatalogus van 2007 voor de Master Media Design van het Piet Zwart Instituut. Het werk is een installatie (bestaande uit een computer, drie printers en een snijmachine) welke gedurende de eindexamententoonstelling de bezoekers de mogelijkheid bood om zelf een exemplaar van de catalogus te genereren.
De catalogus bestaat uit beelden, fragmenten en teksten van het werk van de studenten en een essay waarin de context van de projecten van de studenten wordt beschreven.
Tegelijkertijd stelt “Design Paradigm Shifts” het traditionele grafische ontwerpproces ter discussie terwijl het een alternatief levert alsmede ontwikkelt. De basis voor dit project wordt gevormd door een generatief PostScript- en GNU Troff systeem (Unix typesetting systeem) dat op basis van gepersonaliseerde algoritmes een grafisch ontwerp genereert, produceert, publiceert en print.
Elk ontwerp algoritme bestaat uit een set instructies gebaseerd op de specifieke kwaliteiten (generatieve, destructieve, informatieve, associatieve) van de werken van de individuele studenten. De relatie tussen het instituut, de studenten en het ontwerp voor hun catalogus wordt gelegd in de toepassing van de technieken en het proces van de totstandkoming van de catalogus.
Florian Cramer (course director MA Media Design, Piet Zwart Institute): In “Shift Design Paradigms / Design Paradigm Shifts”, Jorrit puts a radical spin on the design school tradition of designing one’s own graduation catalog. The work’s title reflects an awareness of the ability of the designer not only to reflect on design practice, but also to actively effect change. By creating a non-deterministic rule-based system for producing dynamically generated catalogs, Jorrit demonstrates an ability to deconstruct his own well developed design practice and to reformulate it in a wat that reflects the dynamic nature its subject. Through his use of the GNU Troff system and low level PostScript language, Jorrit explores the design potential of the computer as a symbol manipulator.
His work in this area is unique. We do not know of anyone who has pushed the concept of a generative print design to this limit. The project is also a pioneer achievement in making a contemporary visual design with non-WYSIWYG Open Source typographic tools.
In both his essay writing and course work, Jorrit questions the neutrality and effectiveness of traditional tools and the idea of WYSIWYG graphical interfaces. In addition, he challenges the position of economic powerhouses like Adobe in the design field. In his work, Jorrit manages to find a balance between his own aesthetic criteria and the radical potential of an algorithmic and non-deterministic design system, further establishing himself as a respected and sought-after professional.
Josephine Bosma (onafhankelijk schrijfster/critica) over dit project: “In 2003 the Museum of Contemporary Art in Oslo hosted an exhibition about net.art called ‘Written in Stone’. This exhibition had a unique catalogue, which visitors could assemble on the spot by choosing texts on a computer, printing them and having them bound. The catalogues even had an ISBN number. This years graduation show of the Piet Zwart has a similar catalogue. It is the graduation project of one of its students: Jorrit Sybesma. ‘Design Paradigm Shifts’ allows for the audience to choose an individualized catalogue. There are two options: a simple, basic, informative catalogue or an elaborate, individually adjusted catalogue. The latter contains unique, specially generated pages of the work of each artist. The pages are not bound into a traditional book, but presented as loose leaves in an envelope that accentuates each individual gift. What better way then to present this exhibition of fragments, scraps, traces, bits and noises?”
Mirko Tobias Schäfer (Assistant Professor, University of Utrecht Department for Media and Culture Studies) over dit project:“Another impressive project is Jorrit Sybesma’s printer installation Design Paradigm Shift: gradcatgen, a randomly in real time generated catalog of the graduation show. Sybesma had to reverse engineer many print processes in order to develop algorithms that would allow a complete random generation of the catalog. He emphasizes, the work is a critical notion towards the monolithic and deadlocked software principles and standards in graphic design and print processing.”
Dit werk is geselecteerd geweest voor publicatie in het vaktijdschrift Items in 2007 en is in juli 2007 in WORM geëxposeerd geweest als installatie bij de eindexamenexpositie van het Piet Zwart Institute. Daarnaast is dit werk door het Piet Zwart Instituut ingestuurd voor SIGGRAPH 2008, een internationale conferentie en tentoonstelling over grafisch ontwerpen, computer graphics en interactieve technieken in Los Angeles (USA)
